Discover Your Dosha: Vata, Pitta & Kapha

By the physicians at the Institute · June 2026

One of the first questions in Ayurveda is not “what is your diagnosis?” but “what is your nature?” Ayurveda teaches that each of us has a unique mind-body constitution — called the dosha — and understanding yours is the key to eating, living and healing in a way that truly fits you.

The three doshas

Ayurveda describes three fundamental energies that combine in different proportions in every person:

Why your dosha matters

Most of us are a blend, with one or two doshas leading. Knowing your constitution — and where it is currently out of balance — helps explain why a diet or routine that works beautifully for a friend may not work for you. It guides which foods, daily rhythms, herbs and therapies will bring you back toward balance.

A quick clue: Vata tends to feel cold and dry, Pitta tends to run hot and intense, and Kapha tends toward heaviness and calm. But these are only hints — a proper assessment looks at body, mind and history together.

How your dosha is determined

Rather than a quiz, the physicians assess your constitution in person using traditional methods such as pulse, tongue and iris (iridology) reading, along with a detailed conversation about your health and lifestyle. From there, a plan of food, herbs, daily routine and therapies is tailored to you.

Living in balance

The goal of Ayurveda is not to label you, but to help you understand your nature and live in harmony with it — eating and resting in tune with your body and the seasons. That is where lasting energy, clear digestion and steady wellbeing come from.
